SEPM President’s Reception and Awards Ceremony

Rebekah Grmela

Each year, the Society awards medals of scientific excellence for long term, outstanding contributors in several areas of sedimentary geology. While the annual SEPM Awards Ceremony is usually a formal evening affair, COVID-19 had a few other ideas in mind. This year, we celebrated our 2020 Award Winners via SEPM President Mike Blum’s reception on October 7, 2020.

The awardees were nominated by members of the society. These medals were named in recognition of outstanding geologists in their honor. SEPM also bestows, at its discretion, Honorary Membership and a Distinguished Service Award. These awardees are also nominated by the membership but in this case, must be members themselves.

The other honors that are given by the Society each year are for excellence in communicating the science. These awards are chosen by committees that judge the best oral and poster presentations at our annual meeting and evaluate all of the papers published in our two scientific journals, JSR and PALAIOS. Thus, each year we also recognize the best technical presentations. We also include a special category for student presentations.

This year’s winners include:

  • Twenhofel Medalist: Philip Allen
  • Shepard Medalist: Miriam Katz
  • Pettijohn Medalist: Gail Ashley
  • Moore Medalist: Mary Droser
  • James Lee Wilson Award: Lida Xing
  • Honorary Member: Norman Rosen
  • Dickinson Medalist: Carmala Garzione

You may learn more about the winners, read their bios and see additional details in our 2020 Awards Program, found here

SEPM also honored the recipients of the Outstanding Paper Awards for both of its journals: Journal of Sedimentary Research and PALAIOS.

As always, SEPM recognizes the members of the 2020 Annual Meeting Organizing Committee, without whom the meeting would not have taken place, and SEPM Foundation Student Grant recipients.
