We are launching a campaign to raise $100,000 to honor 100 years of bringing sedimentary science to the world and bringing the scientific community together. Over the next 100 years we plan to continue to invest in students, research and our scientific community. Your gift today will empower tomorrow. | ![]() |

A Century of Discovery
Founded in 1926 as the Society of Economic Paleontologists and Mineralogists, the SEPM Society for Sedimentary Geology began as a professional home for geoscientists focused on the practical challenges of resource exploration, where paleontology and mineralogy were essential tools for understanding sedimentary rocks. Through the mid-20th century, as sedimentology and stratigraphy matured into rigorous scientific disciplines, the society expanded its scope beyond purely economic concerns, fostering fundamental research and launching influential publications such as the Journal of Sedimentary Research and PALAIOS. This intellectual broadening culminated in a redefinition of its mission and a name change that retained the historic acronym SEPM while emphasizing its broader commitment to sedimentary geology. Today, SEPM stands as an international scientific organization that bridges academia and industry, advancing research across sedimentology, stratigraphy, paleontology, and emerging fields such as environmental and planetary geology, while continuing its long tradition of publishing, education, and global collaboration.
