Bouma II Conference Field Trips
The Bouma II Deep Water Geoscience Conference is in Fez, Morocco because of the great outcrops in the area. There are two main field trips planned for the meeting showing both classic turbidites and contourites. While the number allowed on each trip is limited if there is enough interest the trips can be repeated both before and after the conference. |
Trip 1. Channel-levee systems of the Taza-Guercif Basin (Thachrift Turbidite system, Upper Tortonian, NE Morocco)
| This 2-3 day field excursion is dedicated to observing the geometries, sedimentary facies and facies associations of a Tortonian turbidite system (Tachrift Turbidite System: Felletti et al., 2020, 2023, Reguzzi et al., 2023), spectacularly exposed along the southern margin of the Taza-Guercif Basin. The first day will focus on the lower stratigraphic portion of the system (closer to the source of the clastic material), while the second day will concentrate on the more distal mid-upper portion. This itinerary will allow us to observe spatio-temporal variations in the depositional style and architectural elements, from up the slope until the deepwater, providing useful insights for discussions on the system's evolution, depositional mechanisms and controlling factors.

Trip 2. Sandy Contourite Channel System | This 1-2 day field excursion is dedicated to visit exceptional outcrops of mixed bio- siliciclastic sandstones and heterolithic facies of the Upper Miocene Riffian Corridor in the Saiss Basin of northern Morocco. These deposits are associated to the gradual closure of the seaway that once connected the Mediterranean and the Atlantic. They represent a seismic scale record of contourite channels, drifts and gravitational deposits (Capella et al., 2017, de Weger et al., 2020, 2021, 2023) and form an exceptional background for stimulating conceptional discussions about the processes, geometries and stacking patterns of the different erosive and depositional elements of bottom current dominated depositional environments.
