Bouma II - Keynote Speakers

Dr. Matthieu Cartigny

Dr. Matthieu Cartigny is a Royal Society Research Fellow and an Associate Professor of Geography at Durham University. Before his tenure at Durham, Dr. Cartigny served as a Staff Scientist at the UK's National Oceanography Centre. Combining a unique background as a Merchant Navy Officer with an MSc in Mechanical Engineering and a PhD in Sedimentology from Utrecht University, he blends distinct disciplines to study the dynamic, high-energy sedimentological processes that shape the ocean floor. His research focuses on turbidity currents and their impact on global geochemical cycles and seafloor infrastructure. His contributions to marine geosciences have earned him the IAS’s Early-Career Scientist Award and the BSRG’s Roland Goldring Award.

Dr. Jeff Peakall

Dr. Jeff Peakall received his BSc from the University of St Andrews, an MSc from the University of Reading, and a Ph.D from the University of Leeds. He held a series of post-doctoral positions at the University of Leeds before joining the faculty in 2000 where he currently holds a Chair in Process Sedimentology. Jeff led the National Environmental Fluid Dynamics Laboratory at Leeds for 15 years and has been Experimental lead for the Leeds Institute of Fluid Dynamics. His research integrates sedimentology, geomorphology and fluids, with a particular focus on sedimentary processes and deep-marine systems. Jeff has also applied this expertise to nuclear waste remediation and has been a long-term consultant to Speedo International for their Olympic swimsuit programme.

Dr. Sara Rodrigues

Sara Rodrigues is a postdoctoral researcher of The Drifters Research Group at IACT-CSIC. She completed her PhD in 2021 at the Royal Holloway University of London (UK), where she developed a keen interest in understanding the dynamic interactions between bottom and gravity-driven currents and how they influence deep-water environments. Her research spans multiple continental margins, including Argentina, Namibia, Canada, Iberia, Antarctica, and many others. Dr. Rodrigues has contributed extensively to the fields of marine geology and geosciences, with publications in prominent journals such as Earth-Science Reviews, Marine Geology, Scientific Reports and Geology. She is also an active associate editor in Marine Geology and deeply involved in the academic community through the organization of international conferences, projects and workshops.

Dr. Christophe Serié

Dr. Christophe Serié is a distinguished keynote speaker and leading geoscientist with more than 15 years of experience in integrated geoscience workflows and subsurface characterization. As Principal Geoscientist at Vår Energi in Oslo, he combines deep technical expertise with a multidisciplinary perspective shaped by a strong academic foundation and broad international industry experience.

Dr. Serié holds a BSc in Earth Science from the University of Victoria, an MSc in Integrated Petroleum Geoscience from the University of Aberdeen, and a PhD in Petroleum Geoscience from the University of Manchester. His career includes experience in Global New Ventures at ConocoPhillips, along with recent work across the Norwegian Continental Shelf, where he has contributed to advancing subsurface understanding in complex geological settings.

Specializing in data-driven approaches, Dr. Serié focuses on reducing subsurface uncertainty from exploration through development stages. His expertise spans basin-scale 3D seismic analysis, seismic stratigraphy, and seismic geomorphology, enabling him to reveal the spatio-temporal evolution of depositional systems and support the maturation of both existing and emerging play concepts.

In his keynote address, Dr. Serié will share fresh perspectives on the development of deepwater systems along the Norwegian Continental Shelf. He will highlight how regional 3D seismic analysis can be used to unravel the origins of deepwater systems and generate valuable insights for exploration, development, and new play creation.
