Upcoming Meetings
SECOND ANNOUNCEMENT: Geologic Problem Solving with Microfossils II . March 2009, Houston, Texas, USA
Microfossils II, in the spirit of NAMS' original March 2005 Microfossils Conference, will bring together a diverse array of geoscientists to showcase the problem-solving power of microfossils in a variety of geologic settings.
The conference is now scheduled to be held in mid-March, 2009. We are grateful for the willingness of the University of Houston (Houston, Texas, USA) to host this conference. Organizational efforts are underway, including an initial organizing committee. NAMS Treasurer Dr. Donald van Nieuwenhuise of the Department of Geosciences, University of Houston, has agreed to serve as meeting General Chair. Meeting Vice-Chairs are Ron Waszczak of ConocoPhillips (Houston) and Nancy Englehardt-Moore of Devon Energy (Houston). Technical program chairs will be Ron Martin (Department of Geological Sciences, University of Delaware) and Pete McLaughlin (Delaware Geological Survey, University of Delaware).
The theme of this international conference will again be Geological Problem Solving with Microfossils. The conference planning committee is dedicated to facilitating a strong program that will showcase the problem-solving power of microfossils, and stimulate the “cross fertilization” of ideas that results when a diverse group of scientists gather in a common venue.
Specifically, we seek high-quality oral and poster presentations in which microfossils are integrated with allied geological data and substantially contribute to solving a significant geologic problem. Presentations that demonstrate new techniques or novel applications are encouraged. There is no restriction on geologic age (including modern) or geographic area.
As conference planning progresses, updated technical program and schedule information will be available online via the NAMS website. NAMS welcomes the participation of other micropaleontology organizations. Volunteers interested in assiting with work of the organizing committee are also welcome; please contact General Chair Don van Nieuwenhuise. We encourage potential meeting participants to check the NAMS website monthly for updates.
Other Meetings of Interest to Micropaleontologists
- American Association of Stratigraphic Palynologists (AASP) 40th Annual Meeting, this year held September 9-12, 2007, at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Center in Panama. See palynology.org for more details.
- Geological Society of America Annual Meeting, October 28-31, 2007, at the Colorado Convention Center, Denver, Colorado. The GSA Annual Meeting includes sessions organized by the Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research and, in some years, a NAMS-organized evening program of the SEPM Marine Micropaleontology Research Group . See the GSA web site for more information.
Past Meetings
2007 AAPG/SEPM Annual Meeting, Long Beach, CA, April 1-4
NAMS sponsored activities included:
- A poster session, "NAMS Special Session: Integrated Biostratigraphic Analyses," co-chaired by Nancy Englehardt-Moore and Pete McLaughlin, will be held Tuesday morning, April 3. (more details)
- An evening program of talks and informal discussion, Monday, April 2 at 7 p.m at the Westin Hotel, co-sponsored by NAMS' Marine Micropaleontology Research Group and the SEPM Quantitative Stratigraphy Research Group. (more details)
2005 Geological Problem Solving with Microfossils Conference
NAMS hosted the SEPM Research Conference “Geologic Problem Solving with Microfossils - An International Conference in Memory of Garry D. Jones “ during March 6-11, 2005, at Rice University, Houston, Texas. The conference attracted 150 attendees from industry, academia and government from 23 countries.
The technical program was comprised of 48 oral and 51 poster presentations that collectively covered the various microfossil groups that have utility to solve geologic problems, and addressed topics as diverse as Eustacy and Tectonics,
Paleooceanography, Biochronologic Correlation, Reservoirs and Drilling, Ecologic Analogs, and Tools and Techniques.
SEPM has made the Conference Abstract with Program available on their website in PDF format (please CLICK HERE)
The conference also was an excellent opportunity for interaction among micropaleontologists from industry, academia, and government. NAMS gratefully acknowledges the support of our corporate sponsors and co-sponsoring societies for their role in making this conference a great success.
