We welcome colleagues to attend a SEPM Research Conference that showcases the integration of ichnology and sedimentology/stratigraphy. Principal topics include sedimentary facies analysis, genetic stratigraphy, paleoenvironmental interpretation, and petrophysical characterization of bioturbated reservoirs. Maximum registration is 50. This is a research conference and preference will be given to applicants that have accepted abstracts for oral and poster presentation.

Abstracts: Abstracts are invited that showcase the applications of ichnology to all aspects of sedimentology, stratigraphy and depositional environment facies analysis. Ichnologists that apply biogenic structures to these areas and sedimentologists/stratigraphers that integrate ichnology with their work are especially encouraged to attend. Abstract deadline is January 15, 2007. Abstracts may be extended (up to 4 pages long including figures and/or plates). They should be sent in MS Word or in an editable PDF file to James MacEachern (jmaceach@sfu.ca).

Oral Presentations: Talks are 22 minutes long with 3 minutes for questions. All talks will be given in digital format only. There will be three keynote addresses:

  • The Ichnofacies Concept and its Evolving Role in Paleoenvironmental Analysis
  • Ichnofabric Analysis
  • Integrating Ichnology with Sedimentological Facies Analysis

Poster Displays: Poster displays will be presented throughout the conference. Posters will be a maximum of two panels each with dimensions 60" long by 36" high.

Field Excursion: Janok Bhattacharya and Tom Ryer have kindly agreed to lead the field excursions for the conference. Two days of field excursions are planned. One day will be spent on sections of the Ferron Sandstone. The other day will be spent on sections of the Panther Tongue. A third day will be devoted to analyzing cores taken from the Ferron Sandstone from the Muddy Creek section, and perusal of poster displays. A workshop surrounding how ichnological data may be collected and integrated with the sedimentological characteristics will also be given.

Manuscripts: Depending upon the interest and presented case studies, a SEPM Special Publication volume based on the conference may be approved. Interested attendees are invited to begin preparation of manuscripts for external review. Deadline for submission of manuscripts for review is November 30, 2007.

Key Dates:
Abstract Deadline: January 15, 2007
